research proposal: marijuana

We as a society and government are facing big problems from driving under the influence (DUI). What would happen if the government legalizes marijuana? Marijuana, or as it is called cannabis, blow, dope, ganja, grass, hash, pot, skunk, and weed is a big issue that society is arguing for or against legalizing it. Marijuana was known in 6000 B.C in China and they used its seeds in food (Guy, 2005). Moreover, marijuana is made from the green or gray blend of dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant. It is usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria. Marijuana has a chemical, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which makes people get high. The level of highness depends on the method that the THC is taken. When the user smokes marijuana, the THC quickly goes into the blood, and the smoker is going to be high for about an hour. However, if a person mixes it with food, it will take a long time to be digested and absorbed into the blood. As a result, the user is going to be high for about twelve hours. It takes one month to clear the user's blood of THC. Further, marijuana has been ranked behind caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine as the most widely used drug in the world. From most people’s perspective, marijuana has more bad effects than the benefits. While people think that, there is no reason to keep marijuana illegal because it is not an addictive drug, decrease the crimes rate and the black market dealings, and it may be beneficial source of income to tax departments. Marijuana causes health problems it also affects the user's attitudes, ruins the family’s rapport, involves the user in crimes, and leads to heavy drugs.

Q: How it used?
Q: How it works?
Q: How it affect the health?
Q: How it affect on attitudes and reputation?
Q: How it affects in Relationship and society?
Q: How it involves the user in crimes?
Q: How it leads to heavy drugs?

As a start I used books from the Auraria library to be my primary resource, and I also used Skyline as a database. I found information in encyclopedia which gave me a strong start Some of the books that I used were electronic books. More, I also found good information that will support my topic and help me to write about this topic in the internet. I am still looking to find journals that support my thesis.

Even though marijuana is used as a medical drug, it causes many health problems such as lungs damage, children who were delivered by mother’s smoked marijuana, and the effects on blood pressure and the heart. Marijuana also affects the ability to have sex in both males and females. Marijuana affects the user's attitude and the reputation. It may cause the user many problems with relationships and society. While being under marijuana's control, users have a high possibility to be involved in crimes. In most cases, marijuana leads to other dangerous drugs because some of the users mix it with other drugs in order to be in a better mood, but the affects can be stronger and extremely dangerous.

A study showed that "marijuana raises the danger by 10 times of non-lymphoblastic leukemia in children of mothers who used marijuana just before or during pregnancy. Leukemia was not increased by other drugs such as alcohol or tobacco" (Onaivi, 2003, p.267). This is a health problem where marijuana not only affects the mother but the children also by gaining the effects from their mothers.

Children of mothers who used marijuana during pregnancy were reported to more often have shortage in memory and concentration in the early years of their life, language abilities, and image view tasks. That was shown through a huge study (Onaivi, 2003).

some studies shows that the children who were delivered by their mothers who used marijuana during pregnancies are in smaller size and have less weight than normal children who were delivered by non-smoker mothers. Normally, children who were born with less weight and smaller shape are facing health problems (Onaivi, 2003).

For people who have cardiovascular system (CVS) problems, the problems may increase from this point. "Some clinicians report concern over the potential dangers of the large quantities of carbon monoxide in cannabis smoke"(Onaivi, 2003).

"Possible dangers of marijuana use on the CVS may be more important on the elderly, and those with hypertension, coronary artery disease, and/or other cardiovascular diseases"(Onaivi, 2003). As it has shown, it may take the people to a higher level of illness and it may cause bigger problems for them.
marijuana causes high blood pressure and uses narrows blood vessels in a similar way to what is found in heart disease (Dewitt, 2001, p. 705). As well as marijuana increases blood pressure, it also increases the heartbeats. Non-smokers’ hearts beat normally at 70 to 80 beats per minute. However, the smoker’s heartbeats raise by 20 to 50 beats per minute, if it not doubled.

In addition, marijuana causes lower sex drive and it affects the man's sperms as well as it decreases the sperms, the number of sperms, and sperms movement (Drugs and Society, 2006). As it has shown, marijuana can affect the people’s future in having children.
Even though it is not proven yet that marijuana by it self causes crimes. "38 of adolescents used alcohol, marijuana, or hard drugs, and 32 percent committed crimes. Indeed, the association between drug use and crime is significant and substantial"(Scott, 2007). From different point of view, marijuana increases the possibility to be involved in crimes such as being in a dangerous situation while buying the drug.

"Marijuana figures largely in the indigenous efforts of drug users to control it or terminate their engagements with drugs that have been problematic for them" (Hamid, 1998, p. 308). Marijuana is not necessary the first step to heavy drugs, but as it was proved previously; marijuana users have a high possibility to try or be addicted to other drugs. Marijuana users most likely would use other drugs, such as cocaine and crack for the reason that the users need to use more amounts of marijuana to affect their mood as before.

The mentioned problems are caused by smoking marijuana; on the other hand, people who agree with legalizing it have different ideas. Marijuana is not an addictive drug so why should the government prohibit it. Marijuana will decrease crimes rate because it keeps people less nervous and slow. The dealing in the black market will be reduced. By forcing tax on legal marijuana dealings, governments may have great source of money.

Marijuana is a natural plant which people mix its dried flower clusters and leaves and use it with no additional chemicals. Marijuana grows in many places on our planet, such as Morocco and Pakistan. Another point of view, marijuana originally has many chemicals such as THC. Nowadays, marijuana is mixed with other drugs such as crack. However, there are many natural plants and they are poison. Therefore, it is not necessarily that every plant will not cause problems. As it has shown, marijuana produces many affects on humans. However, people who became more involved with marijuana can become dependent on it, whereas some users cannot deal with their anger, nervousness, and boredom unless they used marijuana. Marijuana may not be an addictive drug, but marijuana users would be addicted to marijuana intoxicating effects whereas marijuana users would have the desire to be high most of the time.

Due the fact that marijuana causes relaxation and makes the people feels mellowed, crimes will be reduced. Marijuana is ranked as the fourth worldwide used drug. It is behind caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Therefore, if governments legalize marijuana, governments will reduce the black market dealings. Governments want to stop the black markets by legalizing marijuana. By legalizing marijuana, governments will cut a huge source of income of the black market, which will affect the dealers, and may cause them to stop. On the other hand, marijuana will make the users addicted to it and they may do unexpected things just to have marijuana, which means, users may involve themselves in crimes. Moreover, the black market deals with many other drugs in addition to weapons. While marijuana is considered as a step to other heavy drugs, marijuana users will be addicted to them and that will be another great source of income for black markets.

By treating marijuana as alcohol and forcing tax on it, legalizing marijuana can be very beneficial income for the tax departments. Governments may force a high tax on marijuana sellers and buyers, which will give a great source of income for the tax departments probably more than alcohol. However, forcing high taxes on marijuana dealing will never cover the expenses from the effects of marijuana not only on society, but also on governments. As it was proved, marijuana causes many huge health problems where the hospitals will be full of people who are affected by marijuana. In other words, marijuana has more disadvantages than advantages, so its expenses will be higher than its benefits.

Marijuana was known in B.C. People use its' a mixture of some dried parts to induce euphoria. It has many chemicals and the most important chemical is THC. Marijuana had been ranked behind caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine as the most widely used drug in the world. Legalizing marijuana is one of the biggest issues that people are arguing for or against it. Marijuana has more bad effects than the benefits. It causes many health problems such as lungs damage, effects the children who were delivered by mothers who smoke marijuana, effects blood pressure and heart, the ability to have sex, effects the user's attitude and the reputation, and it causes the user many problems with relationships and society. Marijuana increases the possibility to be involved in crimes. It leads to other dangerous drugs for the reason that some drug dealers mix it with other drugs such as cocaine and crack. On the other hand, people who argue for legalizing marijuana think that marijuana is not an addictive drug. Marijuana will decrease crimes rate and legalizing it will reduce black market dealings. If governments legalize it, it would be a beneficial source of income for the tax departments. However, we as a society and government are facing big problems from driving under an influence (DUI). What would happen if the government legalizes marijuana?
